Carl Hester from Sark wins a gold medal
Carl Hester, Laura Bechtolsheimer and Charlotte Dujardin took first place ahead of Germany at Greenwich Park yesterday afternoon in the dressage event, to claim GB’s 20th gold medal of the 2012 Olympics.
Team GB finished on 79.97 % while Germany posted 78.21 % and Holland 77.12 % ensuring that Germany’s run of seven successive Olympic team titles came to an end.
Carl was born in Sark in 1967 and it was during his childhood in this scenic car-free island that he developed a passion for riding. Members of his family were at Greenwich to support him yesterday. On Sark locals and visitors gathered around the big TV screen at the Island Hall to watch the event and celebrate the team’s victory.
Sark’s only post box will be painted gold to celebrate Carl Hester’s role in Team GB’s gold medal for dressage.
Britain has never previously won any Olympic dressage medal.
