Musicians Éva Guillorel and Robert Bouthillier were on Sark this week sharing their passion for traditional songs from Sark and the other Channel Islands. The couple did a lunchtime recital at La Sablonnerie Hotel as well as an evening performance at the Island Hall during which they sang and talked about the history and origins of the folk songs.   Pictures by Sue Daly Robert & Éva at La Sablonnerie

May on Sark

Sark’s Wildflower Fortnight may have come to an end but the island’s wildflowers are in full bloom. There are still plenty of bluebells to see (and smell!) in the shadier areas such as Harbour Hill and Dixcart Wood and out on the cliffs the gorse, thrift, sea campion and a whole host of other beauties are in flower. The sunny weather with cool sea breezes makes getting around on foot,…

Beaumonts to the Rescue

Sark’s Seigneur, Christopher Beaumont, and his family got stuck into the hospitality industry this month to make sure that Hathaways, the café at the Seigneurie Gardens, was up and running in time for Easter after the previous tenant was unable to open due to ill health. Christopher’s wife Sarah, their daughter Sibyl and Sarah’s sister Annie are running Hathaways every day between 10am and 5pm offering homemade cakes and scones…

Celebrating Easter

With the spring term about to end here on Sark, pupils at the island’s school have been exploring different ways to tell the Easter story at Messy Church, an evening of creative activities organised by the Methodist Chapel. The painting, biscuit decorating and textile fun was followed by a short service and supper but the children have another couple of weeks to wait for their Easter eggs! Pictures  by Sue…

More Signs of Spring

More Signs of Spring Spring is in the soil as well as in the air here on Sark encouraging the black oil beetle, one of our most spectacular insects, out its burrow where it’s spent the winter hibernating. These beetles have an extraordinary life cycle – they are nest parasites of solitary mining bees. The females lay their eggs in underground burrows. When they hatch each larva climbs up on…

A Seal Pup on Sark

An Atlantic grey seal was born on Sark this winter, the first record of seals breeding on the island. The pup was found when it was just over two weeks old by a local lady sea-swimmer after she had seen an adult seal, the pup’s mother, in the same area several times. A couple of days later the pup was abandoned by its mother, a natural behaviour once it is…

Making Way for Heather

The Sark Conservation Commandos were in action again this weekend, taking advantage of the exceptionally stunning weather. They were busy clearing patches of gorse on the Eperquerie that has over-crowded heather, an important species for the silver-studded blue, one of Sark’s most precious butterflies. Jumbling for the Medical Fund

The first jumble sale of the year took place at the weekend with, as usual, a good crowd waiting for the doors to open at 2 o’clock. The stalls of books, clothing, bric-a-brac and toys, along with the raffles and tombola raised almost five hundred pounds for the Professor Saint Fund. Pictures by Sue Daly Perusing the bookstall
