Grand Autumn Show
The Island Hall was unusually busy at 7.30 on the morning of August 28th as islanders arrived from all directions on bicycles laden with produce for the Grand Autumn Show. This is the larger of Sark’s two flower and produce shows and has 134 categories including baking, fruit, vegetables, dairy produce and agricultural crops as well as flowers, herbs and preserves. Among the most hotly contested classes, David Curtis won the Challenge Cup for his collection of vegetables, Rohan Gill took first place in the men’s Victoria sponge class and Dave Scott grew the longest runner bean. The Show also includes a popular novelty fruit and vegetable class that this year was won by Rod Koenig with his charming aubergine characters and Ashley Guille took the children’s prize with his beautiful fish creation. Another highlight was the ‘Moulin Rouge’ themed floral arrangement by Cyril of Petit Beauregard featuring a high kicking Barby doll and two small tins of drink to represent the Cancan. With the hundreds of entries on show and the wonderful scents of baking, roses and sweet peas filling the Hall, the Grand Autumn Show is a real treat and a great display of islanders’ skills and their commitment to this lovely community event.
