Mervyn Peake Blue Plaque unveiling
A TRIBUTE TO
MERVYN PEAKE OF A BLUE PLAQUE
A tribute to the late Artist and Author Mervyn Peake, a Blue Plaque is being erected at the Gallery Stores in the Avenue on the 30th August
The Blue Plaque recognises those who have made an important contribution to the bailiwick of Guernsey and the world generally. Sark is proud to announce that its first Blue Plaque will be to commemorate the life and work of this great Man, Mervyn Peake.
Mervyn is well known, not only for his art, poetry and illustrations but for his world renown works of fiction such as Mr Pye and Gormenghast.
When Mervyn first came to Sark in 1932 to help build the Gallery, he lived in different locations around the Island as well as at the gallery itself, in an upstairs apartment and worked in the Gallery until 1936.
Mervyn returned to Sark with his family in 1946 up until 1950, his wife Maeve, his two sons Sebastian and Fabian, and his daughter Claire was born on Sark.
The impact that Sark had on him was huge for the time he remained on Sark, he created some of his finest work while living here, and is still remembered by the older generation of Sark, to this day. We are lucky the younger generations of the Peake family also hold a special place in their hearts for Sark and are welcome visitors to this very special Island.
If you are able, please come and join-in with the celebrations. The full itinerary is outlined in the poster below. If you should have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Visitor Centre on 01481 832345 or email office@sark.co.uk.
