New Cushions for Conseillors
Attending Chief Pleas meetings is going to be a much more comfortable experience for Sark’s Conseillors from now on thanks to hundreds of hours work by the island’s nimblest fingers. Last autumn Jenny Baker and Suzette Adams decided that the newly refurbished Assembly Room was lacking the finishing touch of some cushions to go with the beautiful new bench seats made by local craftsmen Matthew Rang and Ben Perrée. They raised the funds required for the materials and gathered together a team of 14 embroiderers including one man, Jeremy La Trobe-Bateman. They worked through the winter to create the eight tapestry cushions that feature the island’s coat of arms in the centre. Each cushion also has a time capsule inside with information about the history of Assembly Room, which was once the island’s boys’ school, as well as a little something about the cushion makers. The cushions were used for the first time at the recent Easter Chief Pleas meeting when there was a ceremonial ‘inaugural sitting down’ as well as a drinks reception for those involved afterwards hosted by Chief Pleas President Reg Guille.
