Psychedelic Fun at Sark School
The theme for this year’s Literacy Week at Sark School has been the 1970s with all the pupils studying the writing, fashion and popular culture of four decades ago. The theme was set to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of Michael Beaumont becoming Seigneur in the summer of 1974. The week was brought to a colourful end with a presentation in the Island Hall for families and friends with dancing, singing and talks on many aspects of life in the 70s. Class One sang about the children’s cartoon the Mr Men to the tune of an Abba song and Classes Two and Three presented their research into what people wore, the television and films they watched and the music of that decade. The images of toys and games from the 70s in particular struck many a chord with the audience. The children were dressed accordingly for the whole day in period flares, wigs and clothing in every colour of the rainbow. When it came to dressing up though the teachers themselves may have stolen the show with their psychedelic collection of vintage clothes and platform heels, a memorable way to end the spring half term.
