Sark Celebrates Commonwealth Day
Sark joined over five hundred nations around the world today when islanders gathered to raise a flag to celebrate Commonwealth Day. Pupils of Sark School joined other residents outside the Island Hall at 10am to hear an address from the Queen read by Seigneur Michael Beaumont. Those present responded by pledging their support to the Commonwealth “working together for a future in which there is freedom and justice and prosperity for all, with peace and understanding between peoples and nations.” Sark Constable Lucy Belfield, organiser of the event, then helped school pupils Zack Perrée and Szymon Pattermann raise the Commonwealth flag. The celebrations then moved inside where Craig Guille from Class Four at Sark School cut a cake made by Sharon Boerenbeker and beautifully decorated with a Commonwealth flag made of icing. Tea and cake was then enjoyed by all.
