  • Operation Basalt | Isle of Sark

< Home Operation Basalt The commando raid on Sark that changed the course of history. Operation Basalt was a commando raid that took place on Sark on the night of the 3rd October, 1942. The objective of this raid was to gather information about conditions on Sark and to try and capture one or more German soldiers to take back to England for interrogation. Against all odds, the objectives were achieved but the consequences of the raid were to have repercussions far and beyond the little island of Sark. The commandos landed on the rocks below Hog’s Back and scaled the cliff to the headland above Dixcart Bay. The shore party only had some three hours to conduct the mission before their boat skipper was ordered to leave, with or without them. They broke into La Jaspellerie house where they encountered a Mrs Pittard who most helpfully provided them with information on where some German soldiers could be found; a few hundred yards away in Dixcart Hotel. Mrs Pittard was eventually deported to Germany as a reprisal for the raid in early 1943. Her grave is to be found near to the grave plot of the Seigneurs of Sark. At Dixcart Hotel the commandos discovered a sentry, who was dealt with quietly by knife. Inside the hotel they captured five German soldiers, restrained and herded them back towards the boat. However, upon realising how few men had them captured the Germans started to resist and cry out. In the ensuing melee two of the prisoners were shot dead, two escaped and the Commandos beat a hasty retreat with their one remaining prisoner to the Hog’s Back. Fortunately for the commandos, the skipper had waited beyond his ordered time to leave and was still waiting for them. Mission accomplished they headed full speed back to Portland. In reporting about the raid to the Prime Minister Mr Winston Churchill, the deportations from Sark were heard about in England for the first time. Adolf Hitler, on discovering that German soldiers had been shot with their hands tied issued his infamous and illegal ‘Commando Order’, which in effect ordered the killing of any Commando or irregular soldier captured, no pardon was to be given. However, those captured could be interrogated before being murdered. Many brave men went to their deaths due to this direct order from Hitler.

  • Operation Hardtack | Isle of Sark

< Home Operation Hardtack The story of a commando raid on Sark during WWll. Operation Hardtack was a series of Commando Raids that took place in the Channel Islands in late 1943, when the islands were under German Occupation. On Christmas night, 25th December, a troop of ten commandos were carried by boat to Sark and landed on the rocks at Derrible Point. The aim was that of reconnaissance and the capture of prisoners, however, the raid on this night failed to achieve its objectives when the Commandos were unable to scale the cliff below Hog’s Back. Upon return to Dartmouth they were given permission to try again and planned another raid for the 27th December. The second raid landed the same ten commandos on the rocks below Hog’s Back again but this time from the Dixcart Bay side. The men scaled the cliff but in doing so set off several land mines that killed two of the troop and badly injured three others. The surviving men made it back to their boat and to Dartmouth. The two deceased, Dignac and Bellamy, were buried in the Sark cemetery on the 30th December. It is said that the Dame of Sark demanded to know the names of the men for the Death Register of the island. The Hardtack raids were eventually ended because they caused the enemy to bring up reinforcements, which could have been detrimental to the Allies’ strategy for D-Day.

  • Visitor Centre | Isle of Sark

< Home Visitor Centre The original Girls School. The Visitor Centre was originally built as a Girls' School in 1841 by Seigneur Ernest Le Pelley. It was part of a project, envisaged by his brother, Pierre Le Pelley lll and Rev Cachemaille, whereby surplus money being generated by the new silver mining venture would be used to benefit Sark’s community. When foundations were dug it was discovered that this was in fact the site of the Island’s first cemetery. The Girls' School eventually became the co-ed Infant & Junior School until 2005 when the new school opened and it was turned into the Tourism Centre & Societe Sercquaise Heritage Room.

  • The Prison | Isle of Sark

< Home The Prison The smallest working prison in the world. The original Sark Prison stood near to where St. Peter's Church is today. Over time it became dilapidated and by 1832 the Arsenal was being used as an interim prison, despite being entirely unfit for purpose. The little barrel-roofed two-celled prison we know today was eventually built in 1856 and is one of the world’s smallest prisons still in use. Judicial powers granted to Sark in 1583 allow a prisoner to be held for a maximum of two days. If the crime is severe enough to warrant further punishment the offender will be sent to Guernsey prison.
