Sheep Racing Weekend 2014!
Sark’s largest fund-raising event of the year took place recently when the Carnival Committee and their army of helpers ran the annual Sheep Racing weekend. Over a thousand visitors as well as hundreds of residents enjoyed the fun that began on Friday night with live music from Sark band The Recks and City Limits from Guernsey followed by two days of racing. Saturday was Newmarket Day and the event opened with a colourful fancy dress parade from the Avenue to the field where there were children’s games, tombolas, food stalls and, of course, the Baa. There were seven races including a guest appearance by the woolly star of the BBC’s ‘An Island Parish’, Persil the sheep. His life as a celebrity though has taken its toll on his racing abilities as he came last in his race against a field of much younger sheep!
Sunday was Ascot Day with seven more races and the ladies’ hat parade and competition. This year’s winner was Beth Gelling from Huddersfield in Yorkshire with a sheep themed hat trimmed with mint. The new Miss Sark Princess was also crowned on Sunday when Katie Knight was presented with her sash and tiara by the previous Princess, Mali Chatterton. Funds raised from the whole weekend go towards the Professor Saint Medical Fund that helps islanders with prescription costs and the total amount raised through the year will be revealed at the Cheque Presentation Night in the winter.
Next years Sheep Racing dates have been confirmed: July Friday 17th – Sunday 19th July 2015!
