Spring is in the Air
Spring is well and truly underway here in Sark. The first lambs were born in January and this month Dave Scott’s flock are lambing. Dave has around a hundred ewes, the largest flock not only in Sark but the whole of the Channel Islands. Along with Rossford, Eugene and Phil (on Little Sark) Dave keeps the island supplied with delicious Sark lamb which he believes has a unique flavour because of the abundance of wild herbs in their grazing.
In the plant world, the first of the wild garlic, primroses and celandines are blooming in the hedgerows and woodlands and on the cliffs some patches of gorse are also coming into flower. On sunny days there’s a real sense that the worst of the winter is over but it’s too early to give up the hats, gloves and scarves just yet!
