Sark Astronomy Society has been celebrating the start of the autumn star gazing season recently with a series of events. In the middle of September they held a Starfest hosted by Dr Marek Kukula, the public astronomer from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. He opened the event with a fascinating talk on black holes and then gave a guided tour of the exhibition of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year winning entries at the Visitor Centre. (The exhibition continues until the end of October.) In the evening Marek hosted a dinner at Stocks Hotel where he gave another talk before leading a star gazing walk. This is Marek’s second visit to Sark and once again the clouds cleared for the greater part of his stay allowing him to enjoy and explain Sark’s stunning night sky.
At the end of September Sark Astronomy Society held a dog racing evening at the Island Hall to raise funds. (The canines were all on film!) Dave Cocksedge was compere for the evening and he and Stevie Cole ran the tote. Along with the raffle run by Reg and Wendy Guille, the event raised £348.
