The Fishing Season Closes
The next five months are a good time to be a lobster or crab living in Sark waters because the island’s potting season closed this week. The regulations that cover Sark’s three-mile limit dictate that no potting is allowed from now until the end of March. Sark’s fishermen have now brought in all of their pots and are repairing them before storing them until the spring. The rule was originally brought in to protect the interest of the island’s fishermen who need to take their boats out of the water for the winter, as Sark has no harbour that is safe in all weather. This means that fishermen from the other islands, with larger boats and harbours, cannot fish Sark waters either but also gives the lobster and crab population a five month reprieve from fishing effort. It’s a system that’s good for both the fishermen and the crustaceans!
