The Scarecrows Are Here!
It was judgement day yesterday for the scarecrow makers of Sark with the annual Scarecrow competition. There were 12 entries in the event that is organised by Sark Community Blooms and was judged by the Speaker of Chief Pleas, Arthur Rolfe. In honour of the royal nuptials, the theme this year is weddings and entries include traditional white weddings and a gay wedding. There is a bride with a broccoli bouquet and a wedding party with real cakes. One competitor with a sense of humour made a scarecrow of someone weeding, rather than a wedding scene! The winner is the shot gun wedding made by Helen Plummer, Rose Barham and Dick Wilson at Mon Plaisir Stores and comes complete with a pregnant bride, a very unhappy groom, an irate (and armed!) father of the bride and a cradle ready for the baby. Second place went to Stocks Hotel for their wedding couple on a bicycle made for two, decorated with real daisies, and the staff of HSBC Bank came third with their Worzel Gummidge and Aunt Sally. The scarecrow trail is open for the next week with questions to answer about each creation and directions to take you around the island to see all of the scarecrows. Entry forms are available at the Visitor Centre.
