Pupils in Sark School’s Class Three were all prepared for the eclipse today with a special outdoors science lesson and solar viewers. Sadly though the heavy cloud failed to lift and there wasn’t even a glimpse of the sun but the light level fell significantly and the children did observe a group of birds returning to some nearby trees to roost thinking it was nightfall. Where skies were clearer a 98% partial eclipse of the sun by the moon was visible from the most northerly parts of the UK and up to 83% was seen in some areas of the south but the Channel Islands were unlucky with cloudy skies.
