Harbour Access

Sark’s harbour has no ramp, only stairs for embarking and disembarking from the ferry, which can often be at low tide. Visitors requiring help with stairs or the transfer to the tractor bus must pre-arrange assistance at least one week before arrival, and there may be a charge for this service. Please contact the Visitor Centre on +44 (0) 1481 832345 or office@sark.co.uk to arrange assistance.

 

Road and Path Conditions

All roads on Sark are unpaved, making surfaces uneven and sometimes steep. Wheelchair users, visually impaired visitors or those who rely on stable terrain should take this into account.
 

Mobility Scooters

Sark has several mobility scooters, available by pre-booking and only for visitors with a certified medical need; processing takes time, so early application is essential. Please contact the Visitor Centre on +44 (0) 1481 832345 or office@sark.co.uk to reserve your mobility scooter.

 

On-Island Transport

Sark is car-free. Travel is typically on foot, by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or the harbour tractor bus, which itself requires negotiating a couple of steps to access, and is only available until the top of the Harbour Hill.

Visitors with sensory or cognitive disabilities should be aware of Sark’s unique environment and plan accordingly. The following guidance is provided to help visitors anticipate challenges and prepare safely.
 

For Visitors with Visual Impairments

As the island’s paths and roads are unpaved, uneven, and often narrow, navigating Sark can be difficult without assistance. Considerations include:

• Steep gradients, particularly on the route from the harbour to the village.
• Lack of tactile paving or formal wayfinding markers.
• Sark is the world’s first Dark Skies Island meaning that there is little in the way of street lighting.

Visitors may wish to:

• Travel with a companion or guide.
• Bring mobility aids suited to uneven terrain (e.g. trekking cane tips).
• Arrange accommodation close to the village centre to minimise long walks in minimal light conditions.

For Visitors with Hearing Impairments

There are no reported issues with sound-based navigation, however, environmental and logistical factors may still affect communication:

• Emergency alerts or verbal safety instructions (e.g. at the harbour or on boats) may rely on spoken announcements.
• Some services may require verbal interaction on arrival.
 

To prepare:

• Carry written requests or communication cards where helpful.

For Visitors with Cognitive or Neurodiverse Needs

Sark’s environment is calm and low -traffic, but visitors should consider:

• The physical challenge of moving around the island on foot.
• Limited signage and minimal structured transport options.
• Potential sensory overload in natural areas (wind, cliffs, wide-open spaces).

Helpful preparations may include:

• Staying near the main village to reduce unpredictability in navigation.
• Pre-planning routes using maps or accompanied exploration.
• Informing accommodation providers of any particular support needs.

Sark has a Doctor and Medical Centre offering limited services; please contact the Sark Medical Centre on +44 (0) 1481 832045 if necessary or call 999 in the event of an emergency.

In emergencies requiring hospital care, patients are transported to Guernsey via marine ambulance or RNLI lifeboat.

Visitors with significant medical needs should plan accordingly and travel with any required medications or documentation.

​Visitors with medical or accessibility requirements should be aware that Sark does not have
an NHS healthcare service and should ensure they have suitable private medical and travel
insurance to cover any treatment, assistance, or emergency care that may be required.
